Tungnath trail and meadows with peaks

Tungnath–Ukhimath–Deoria Tal: 2–4 Day Plan

Treks & Pilgrimage • 26 Oct 2025 • 7 min read
Trail through forests near Chopta

Coordinates: Chopta ~30.34°N, 79.21°E; Ukhimath ~30.53°N, 79.07°E; Deoria Tal ~30.50°N, 79.22°E.

Temperature: Apr–Jun 5–18°C; Jul–Aug 8–16°C (rains); Oct–Nov 2–12°C; winters can be below freezing with snow.

The area mixes alpine meadows and mixed forest over ancient metamorphic bedrock—great biodiversity and views. This route ties the Tungnath trek with Ukhimath—the winter seat for Kedarnath after the kapat closes—and a sunrise walk to Deoria Tal.

Historical Significance

Tungnath is among the Panch Kedar, with rituals continuing through winter by moving the deity to lower-altitude temples. Ukhimath (Omkareshwar Temple) is venerated as the winter seat for the Kedarnath deity. Deoria Tal carries local legends and offers iconic peak reflections at dawn—an enduring stop for travellers and devotees alike.

How to Reach

  • By road: Rishikesh → Devprayag → Srinagar → Rudraprayag → Ukhimath → Chopta (for Tungnath trailhead) / Sari (for Deoria Tal).
  • By air: Dehradun (Jolly Grant). Continue by road via Rishikesh–Rudraprayag–Ukhimath.
  • Trails: Tungnath ~3.5 km from Chopta; Chandrashila +1.5 km steep. Deoria Tal ~2.5 km from Sari; start pre-sunrise for reflections.

Where to Stay

Stay options span meadow-side camps, homestays, and small hotels across Chopta, Baniya Kund, Duggalbitta, and Sari. Families should pick insulated rooms, hot water, and in-house dining; trekkers who want a dawn start may choose simpler stays near the trailhead.

In peak season, consider Ukhimath or Rudraprayag for more inventory. Keep a buffer night in shoulder/winter months.

Essential Tips

  • Layer up; winds pick up near Chandrashila—gloves/beanie help.
  • Good-grip footwear; trekking poles ease the descent.
  • Monsoon brings slippery stones—carry rain cover and gaiters.
  • If adding Deoria Tal, reach Sari by evening for early start.
